Volunteer Hub Mural, National Museum Cardiff
Objective: Turn a windowless volunteer hub into a bright creative space that captures the spirit of volunteering at National Museum Cardiff, the building and its collection.
Response: The visual language for this mural was inspired by the “Wrexham Tailor’s Quilt”; one of our favourite item of the museum’s collection. Like the museum’s volunteering programme, quilting brings together communities to work on collaborative projects and each individual contribution holds an identity.
The design plays with the similarity of the buildings architecture and quilting patterns, it splits into 2 divided horizontal sections to mimic the separation of science and art across the museum’s 2 floors.
Working closely with curators, capturing the collection and learning about the responsibilities of volunteers through meaningful conversation helped shape a design that is creative yet instantly recognisable as belonging to the museum.
