Volunteer Hub Mural - St Fagans National History Museum

Objective: Create a celebratory mural for 10-year anniversary of the museum’s volunteering program which embodies the dedication and spirit of the museum’s diverse cohort of volunteers.

Meaningful engagement with volunteers and taking the time to connect with the museum’s collection allowed us to create a symbolic mural that fosters a sense of pride and identity.

Response: To create a meaningful mural that truly represented 10 years of dedication from volunteers across seven museum sites in wildly varying roles we started this project with an extensive research and participation period.

We travelled to all seven national museum sites across Wales, spoke to curators, explored collections, and organised a series of creative “mark making” workshops with volunteers. This work helped us capture a wealth of information, in particular, the voice and experiences of volunteers and determined the content of the final mural.

The format of the artwork was chosen to mimic celebratory, historical hanging banners. The typography, colour scheme and illustration styles were influenced by traditional Welsh crafting techniques and materials observed during our research period.

Meaningful engagement with volunteers and taking the time to connect with the museum’s collection allowed us to create a symbolic mural that fosters a sense of pride and identity.
