Lamby Way Recycling Centre Mural
Objective: Support local children in exercising their right to a voice and shaping the design of a playful mural that reinvigorates Cardiff’s largest recycling centre, and champions aspects of the local authority’s waste strategy.
Response:
Three 2 hr workshops with local children were delivered with Child Friendly Cardiff in their city-centre pop-up space. In these workshops children were asked to help us tell the story of an aluminium can through the recycling process – a long narrative that was chosen to fit with the extensive dimensions of the wall.
The children’s drawings fed directly into the final design and made an unemotional recycling process into a magical story that now brings joy and wonder to the central 300m2 wall.
Cardiff is working to become the UK’s first UNICEF Child Friendly City, a city with the rights of children at its heart. Working with children in the design of this mural helped them exercise their right to have a voice and participate in decision making building their confidence and fosters a sense of belonging. Public response to the mural has been one of unconditional positivity.
